Moxibustion and acupuncture
what is Moxibustion therapy?
Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy. It is a traditional Chinese acupuncture technique that incorporates the use of a medicinal herb called mugwort (moxa) -- a spongy dried leaf placed on the skin or on a needle. Moxibustion helps to warm specific areas of the body to stimulate circulation and promote healthy lymphatic flow. It has a very pleasant and relaxing aroma. Sometimes moxa is also infused with salt or ginger.
What is moxibustion used for?
Moxibustion has many potential benefits and can be extremely effective in treating a myriad of illnesses and deficiencies. The uses for moxa in acupuncture heat therapy include, but are not limited to:
Improved digestion – particularly, diarrhea and various abdominal discomforts
Boosting immunity – it is very useful in protecting the body from the flu and colds
Menstrual pain/bleeding & other gynecological conditions
Helps to turn breech babies into proper position prior to labor
Pain mitigation – this includes pain in virtually any area of the body, as well as headache and migraine pain
Speeds up healing time for spots injuries or other injury
Moxa even has hemostatic properties and can help control bleeding
Is moxibustion right for you?
In the vast majority of cases moxibustion is considered appropriate for use. However, there are some contraindicated conditions, to include infectious diseases, fever, hypertension, and certain other conditions.
